In a matter of one single minute, the iScann Tester is able to determine if a disc is likely to skip or freeze when played in a normal consumer disc drive with over 90% reliability. A higher percentage can be obtained by using longer scans. The iScann achieves this high accuracy by taking hundreds of large data samples across the whole surface of the disc data and looking for the number and concentration or hard errors, soft errors, and for repeated requests for read retries.
